We all love getting something for free - its our wonderful human nature.
But if "free" damages our health and our environment maybe it is time we looked for a better way.
Most supermarkets in Malta will give you vouchers for "free" packets of bottled drinking water - and this traps us into spending money to get our drinking water and damaging the environment with the continuation of plastic bottle usage.
So the good news is that you can free yourself from the trap of "free" water and even gain more money to spend on more appropriate products from your favourite store.
We studied the mathamatics of a leading supermarket chain in Malta to work out the figures for you just so you know exactly how much you can save every year. Most supermarkets and even some small shops will match the leading supermarket rates.
If you spend enough to get 1 packet of water a week you will be €17 a year better off.
If you spend enough to get 2 packets of water a week you will be €94 a year better off.
If you spend enough to get 3 packets of water a week you will be €170 a year better off.
If you spend enough to get 4 packets of water a week you will be €248 a year better off.
So read on to get more information about how all this works, it maybe worth up to €248 for your family a year, and more if you consume more water!
The rules of the game
So first lets understand what the supermarket gives you for every €1 you spend with them.
We start with the fact that for every €30 you spend the supermarket gives you a voucher that gets you 1 free packet of 6 bottles of 2L still water.
As a consumer it feels like your getting a great deal right? A whole pack of water you would buy for say €2.50 and you get it for FREE - just spending €30!
But lets look at a few facts:
- What do you think it costs the supermarket to give you their own branded bottled water - 6 bottles at maybe €1 or less - probably.
- You think your getting the best quality water? Probably not after all its free right.
- Whatver you get - for sure it will be filtered water from the Malta public supply - wrapped in a plastic bottle you have to store, transport, manage, dispose of etc..
- And these plastic bottles become someone elses problem when they get disposed - thats not fair right?
- You know there is a better way really but you still take the water - its free after all!
What if I dont use the voucher for water then?
So if you convert your water voucher to points - you will get 200 points per voucher for a pack of water.
So now spending €30 gets you 200 points.
And you can convert 684 points to €5 ( as at 20.03.2021)
So that means that for every voucher you get €1.48 worth of points
So if you do not use the voucher for water - you get the value of the points.
for 1 pack a week thats €76.96
for 2 packs a week thats €153.92
for 3 packs a week thats €230.88
for 4 packs a week thats €307.84
So what do I do for drinking water then?
TAPP 2 TWIST water filter refills are €60 a year, for 4 filters. Each filter lasts for 3 months and delivers up to 1200L of water, so for €60 a year you can get all the water you need!
€60 a year is €1.15 a week
So many people end up getting their free water and having to buy some - now you will never have to do either.
With TAPP 2 TWIST you have all your drinking water without ever having to lift a plastic bottle again.
So what do I gain in points value I can spend?
If we deduct the cost of water filters per year from the total points value earned from your shopping we get the gain in points value that you will be able to spend in the supermarket.
for 1 pack a week thats €76.96 less €60 so you gain €16.96 and all the drinking water you want with no plastic bottles to deal with
for 2 packs a week thats €153.92 less €60 so you gain €93.96 and all the drinking water you want with no plastic bottles to deal with
for 3 packs a week thats €230.88 less €60 so you gain €170.88 and all the drinking water you want with no plastic bottles to deal with
for 4 packs a week thats €307.84 less €60 so you gain €247.84 and all the drinking water you want with no plastic bottles to deal with
