Supporting Environmental Action in Malta: Our Partnership with the Malta Ranger Unit

Every day across Malta, dedicated rangers work on the frontlines to monitor, educate, and protect our countryside and seas. At Tappwater Malta, our mission to eliminate single-use plastic waste naturally connects us with local organisations fighting to protect our island's natural environment.

Summary

This article introduces Tappwater Malta’s partnership with the Malta Ranger Unit (MRU) and details how we support their ongoing environmental protection work through sponsorship and equipment. It also provides all necessary information for Tappwater customers to register for our first free joint nature walk at Majjistral Park on October 25th, 2026.

Key Points

Direct NGO Support: Tappwater Malta actively assists the Malta Ranger Unit with financial sponsorship and essential equipment for daily operations.
Land and Sea Coverage: The MRU and Malta Sea Ranger Unit (MSRU) operate without direct government funding to monitor illegalities and safeguard local ecosystems.
Exclusive Free Customer Event: A free morning walk co-hosted by Tappwater and the MRU takes place at Majjistral Park on Sunday, October 25th, 2026.
Practical Sustainability: Reducing single-use plastic at home with Tappwater water filters directly aligns with protecting Malta's natural spaces.

Our Sustainability Mission and Supporting Local NGOs

At Tappwater Malta, our business rests on three key pillars: Trust, Waste, and Taste. We aim to make clean water affordable and effortless for every household while eliminating the need for single-use plastic water bottles. Since our launch in 2020, over 8,000 households in Malta have made the switch to our filtration systems.

While our primary focus is helping families eliminate plastic waste in the kitchen, true environmental responsibility extends beyond household products. That is why we actively support local non-governmental organisations (NGOs) dedicated to preserving Malta's natural environment. By backing the Malta Ranger Unit with small pieces of equipment and direct sponsorship, we help empower the individuals who spend their days actively safeguarding our countryside and marine habitats.

The Essential Work of the Malta Ranger Unit (MRU)

The Malta Ranger Unit (MRU) is a Maltese registered voluntary organisation (VO/2443) dedicated to empowering citizens to protect the environment through education, prevention, monitoring, and reporting of environmental illegalities. Since its establishment, the MRU has become a trusted point of reference for the public, authorities, and local communities, supporting enforcement under the Environment Protection Act (Chapter 549) and related legislation.

In 2025, the MRU launched the Malta Sea Ranger Unit (MSRU) in response to a sharp increase in maritime-related reports, including illegal fishing practices, user conflicts, and conservation zone monitoring. This maritime branch complements the established land-based ranger operations, creating an integrated ridge-to-reef approach to environmental protection across Malta.

Operating entirely without direct government funding, the MRU and MSRU rely on donations, volunteers, project-based grants, and corporate sponsorships to sustain their work. Through daily patrols, public reporting, and community engagement, the Rangers serve as a neutral bridge between authorities and the public, helping improve environmental compliance through trust and awareness.
