Share
I. Introduction: A New Era for Maltese Tap Water
We’ve all been there. A frantic trip to the supermarket, struggling to heave heavy crates of plastic water bottles into the trolley, then into the car, and finally, up the stairs to our homes. It's a common struggle, and it comes at a significant cost, both to our wallets and to our environment. In a country like Malta, with its beautiful coastlines and a deep connection to the sea, the issue of plastic waste from single-use bottles is particularly pressing.
Vulnerable households in particular may struggle to invest in a plastic free solution because of financial constraints.
But what if there was a better way? A way to access clean, great-tasting water at home without the hassle and the plastic? And at zero cost for vulnerable households in Malta.
The Government of Malta has heard our call. In a monumental step towards a more sustainable future, they have launched the Tap Water Scheme. This fantastic initiative provides a clear solution, and Tappwater is a proud partner, ready to help you make the most of it.
This blog will dive into the details of this new scheme, explain how you can benefit, and show you how Tappwater’s products are the perfect choice to help you enjoy a future that is cleaner, more convenient, and completely plastic-free.
II. Understanding the Tap Water Scheme
Announced in June 2025, the Tap Water Scheme is a national initiative administered by the Regulator for Energy and Water Services (REWS). Its main goal is to reduce the use of plastic containers for bottled water by promoting the use of activated carbon water filtration systems.
This scheme is a key part of a broader government drive to reduce plastic bottle usage, working in conjunction with the Water Services Corporation (WSC). Following substantial investment and improvements in the consistency of Malta's tap water, this initiative is designed to encourage more people to drink directly from their taps. In fact, the WSC specifically highlights the advantages of using activated carbon filters, such as Tappwater, as a key component of this effort, especially to resolve any lingering doubts about water quality or because of the poor taste..
So, how does it work?
Starting July 1, 2025, the government sent 13,000 vouchers to eligible vulnerable households in Malta by post. Each of these vouchers has a face value of €100 and a unique QR code for validation. These vouchers can be exchanged for activated carbon water filters at participating retailers. The scheme provides full financial support, covering 100% of the cost up to €100, removing the financial burden for households in need. The retailer is then paid by the government for the amount of €100.
III. The Tappwater Advantage: Making the Most of Your Voucher
At Tappwater, we are incredibly proud to be a valid supplier for this scheme. We have been supplying filters in Malta for five years and are committed to continuing this for the long term. As an international brand present in over 50 countries, you can trust our products.
Tappwater filters use activated carbon, which is specifically highlighted by the WSC as an effective solution. These filters significantly improve the taste and consistency of your tap water, giving you the confidence to drink straight from the tap and avoid plastic bottles fro drinking water.
To help you get the best value from your €100 voucher, we’ve worked with our retail partners to create two special offers, ensuring you have no extra payments to make.
Option 1: The Tappwater EcoPro Annual Pack
The EcoPro is a perfect fit for any household, even those with up to seven people. Each filter lasts for three months, and with four filters included in the pack, you get a full year's supply. Each filter can deliver up to 1,200 liters of clean, delicious drinking water. The retail price for this pack is €119, but by using your voucher, you get a discount of €19 and a full year of great-tasting water at no extra cost.
When it's time for refills next year, a pack of four filters will cost just €69. Compare this to the cost of continually buying plastic bottles or using filter jugs, which only give you about 150 liters per filter! The savings are clear and substantial.
Option 2: The Tappwater EcoPro Compact Annual Pack
For smaller households of one or two people, the EcoPro Compact is a brilliant choice. This pack comes with six filters, with each one lasting for two months and delivering up to 300 liters of water. With a retail price of €114, exchanging your €100 voucher for this pack gets you a €14 discount and a whole year of filtered water for free.
Next year, a six-pack of refills will cost just €59, saving you money compared to filter jugs and giving you much more filtered water.
