World Water Day: A Global Call to Action

World Water Day is an annual observance held on March 22nd to raise awareness of the importance of fresh water and advocate for sustainable water management. The day was established in 1993 by the United Nations General Assembly and has been celebrated ever since.

Background

The idea for World Water Day originated at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), also known as the Earth Summit. During the conference, participants recognized the critical importance of fresh water for human health and development and the need to address global water challenges.

World Water Day 2024: Water for Peace

In 2024, World Water Day will focus on the theme of "Water for Peace." This theme highlights the vital role that water plays in fostering peace and prosperity around the world.

When we cooperate on water issues, we create a positive ripple effect. We foster harmony, generate prosperity, and build resilience to shared challenges.

We must recognize that water is not just a resource to be used and competed over—it is a human right, essential for every aspect of life.

On this World Water Day, we need to unite around water and use it for peace. By doing so, we can lay the foundations for a more stable and prosperous tomorrow.

By working together, we can create a water-secure world where everyone has access to this essential resource.

At the time of writing there are no listed events for World water Day in Malta for 2024, although in past years the Be the Change campaign run by the Energy & Water Agency has run multiple events for many years, it's not clear at the time of writing what maybe launched.

The Green Diary interviewed Phil Richards from TAPP Water and in this podcast we discussed water saving, the scarcity crisis and some great water conservation tips at home.

Conclusion

World Water Day is an important opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of fresh water and advocate for sustainable water management. By working together, we can create a water-secure world for everyone.

The United Nations estimates that over 2 billion people worldwide do not have access to safely managed drinking water services. This includes people living in rural areas, informal settlements, and conflict zones. Women and girls are often disproportionately affected by water scarcity and pollution.
