Beneath the Surface: Investigating the Groundwater contamination in Malta's Tap Water
Share
In this edited version of the live stream, we will delve into the intricacies of Malta's groundwater and its impact on tap water quality.
Malta relies on groundwater for one-third of its tap water supply. However, recent studies have shown that all of Malta's groundwater resources fail to meet good quality standards.
The primary culprit behind this contamination is nitrates derived from agricultural activities. We discuss these and explore other contaminants, such as pharmaceuticals and industrial pollutants which are widespread in our water courses that feed our groundwater in Malta.
Additionally, we will address the issue of over-abstraction, which leads to a decrease in water levels and an increase in contaminants' concentration.
